Child-friendly schools in Uganda
Five secondary schools are becoming child-friendly learning environments with greater child protection, non-violence, and co-determination. An important step toward better educational opportunities!
„It is not easy to change overnight, but today I realize that discipline can be built through guidance, not punishment.”

Child protection is an issue all over the world. With the aim of better protecting children from violence and abuse and making schools more child-friendly, PROBONO cooperates with experienced human rights and child protection organizations in Tanzania and Uganda.
Laws to protect children from violence and abuse exist in Tanzania and Uganda. But what about enforcement? Both schools and families lack knowledge about children's rights and sensitivity to potential dangerous situations. Victims of violence and abuse often cannot access help or do not seek it in the first place. In many cases, fear of the perpetrators plays a role. But poverty also plays a part – many victims and witnesses withdraw their statements in exchange for money.
In our projects, child protection guidelines are developed and adopted at the participating schools. Children's rights clubs are established, in which students themselves address the issue of children's rights and child protection and learn about their rights. Experienced trainers show teachers educational alternatives to corporal punishment, which is still widespread in schools. Together with school administrators, teachers, parents, and the relevant government agencies, effective support systems are also established.
„At first, I thought these policies made us powerless, but now I see they make us more responsible educators.”

In cooperation with the Tanzanian women's and children's rights organization AJISO, PROBONO is working at Mwanga High School to protect children and promote non-violent education. Workshops for teachers and the founding of the children's rights club “Tuwalinde Watoto” are creating structures that strengthen children's rights and create a safe learning environment.
In Mwanga and Monduli, our child protection project raises awareness of children's rights, not only in schools but throughout entire village communities. Through discussions, workshops, and plays, parents, traditional leaders, and local authorities are involved in finding ways to protect children from violence and bring about lasting change.
As part of the child protection project, pupils at two Tanzanian primary schools learn about their rights, how to boost their self-confidence, and how to use self-defense strategies. This helps protect girls in particular from violence.
In a two-day workshop, teachers from three Tanzanian partner schools learned how to properly support children when they seek help. Role-playing and reflection exercises demonstrated how important it is to listen openly and empathetically in order to protect students effectively.
