New large school libraries at two secondary schools in Tanzania
PROBONO has built and furnished new school libraries at two large public secondary schools in Tanzania in 2022/23. Both schools are delighted with the many new books and the fact that they now have a place where children can read and work in their free time.
The libraries were equipped not only with textbooks, dictionaries, and reference works, but also with children's and young adult literature and board games such as Scrabble. This promotes English language skills and expands vocabulary in a playful way – an offer that the girls and boys have accepted with great enthusiasm.
At Kiluvya School, two library lessons per week have been introduced for each class and integrated into the timetable. This ensures that all 1,400 students use the library regularly. The popularity of the library is also reflected in the children's desire to extend opening hours to Saturdays. Tingatinga School has diverted money from its tight school budget and hired a librarian to make the best use of the library and develop it further. We are very pleased that the project has been so well received at both schools!
The school administrations of both schools expect that the school libraries will also have a positive impact on learning outcomes and, on behalf of the entire school community, express their sincere gratitude for the libraries.
