Improving the water supply at St. Martin's School in Uganda
Providing sufficient drinking water is a major challenge at many schools in East Africa. This was also the case at St. Martin's School in southern Uganda. The secondary boarding school is not connected to the public water supply and does not have its own well. The school covers its water needs solely with rainwater, which is collected in large tanks during the rainy season. However, the capacity for rainwater storage was far from sufficient. During the dry seasons, the students had to walk many kilometers to the nearest water source to carry water back to the school in large canisters. This was hard physical work and a lot of time was lost, which could then be spent on lessons.
Fortunately, that is now a thing of the past! Thanks to funding from the “Water for the World” foundation, PROBONO was able to purchase three large new 10,000-liter water tanks for St. Martin's School and repair the leaky existing water tank with a storage capacity of 40,000 liters. Now the school has enough water all year round, and above all: clean water!
Along with the new water tanks, PROBONO also installed a water filter. This means that rainwater no longer has to be boiled and the children can drink directly from the tap. This not only saves time, but also a lot of firewood. Good for climate protection!
