Why are we committed?
Education is the key to development and overcoming poverty. That is why promoting education and supporting schools is so crucial - not only for improving individual prospects, but also for the development of society as a whole. Whether it is economic development, environmental protection, good governance, or the fight against corruption, education imparts knowledge in all these areas and is a prerequisite for any progress in development.
In the countries of East Africa, however, the conditions for good schooling are often not in place. Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya are plagued by extreme poverty. The school system is severely underfunded. There is a lack of textbooks and classrooms, qualified teachers and laboratory equipment, and in some schools even chalk. The quality of school education is very low in many schools. Failure rates in national exams are high. Many families cannot afford the costs of school attendance. Illiteracy is widespread.
That is why PROBONO has been committed to promoting school education for more than 21 years, thereby contributing to better learning outcomes.
Our focus: Improving the quality of school education
The number of children attending school in East Africa has increased significantly in recent decades. The problem is that many children do not learn much at school. Our focus is therefore on improving the quality of school education and increasing the learning success and skills of children and young people – in line with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 4, which calls for high-quality education for all.
Together with local partner organizations, PROBONO supports schools in Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya by...
- Purchasing books and teaching materials
- Providing systematic teacher training
- Implementing career-oriented and agricultural projects (including an entrepreneurship program, a dual training project, and school gardens)
- Improving school infrastructure, including the construction of classrooms, dormitories, laboratories, school kitchens, school toilets, etc.
- Promoting reading
- Improving water and electricity supply
- Supporting the digitization of learning (purchasing computers and installing internet access)
- Promoting child-friendly schools by strengthening children's rights and child protection
What makes our work special
Many of our projects are integrated into North-South school partnerships. This not only improves learning and living conditions in East Africa, but also encourages German children and young people to become socially engaged and learn about global issues. Schools in Germany are highly committed to supporting their partner schools in the South with their own fundraising campaigns, e.g., bazaars, charity runs, and flea markets.
Our support is not a one-off, but long-term and sustainable within the framework of school partnerships. Our employees and cooperation partners on site ensure transparent implementation and control of all projects, which are always carried out in collaboration with the schools in the South. Wherever possible, the African schools make their own contribution to the projects. All partner schools are visited regularly by PROBONO.
