In addition to motivated teachers and committed students, a good school education also requires a safe, well-equipped place to learn. However, the reality at many schools in East Africa is very different: dilapidated buildings, leaky roofs, rooms that are far too small, and insufficient school furniture characterize everyday life at many schools. Some classes have more than a hundred children and only half as many tables and chairs. Sometimes lessons take place outdoors, which causes major problems, especially during the rainy season.
These difficult conditions have a direct impact on the quality of learning, as children and young people find it difficult to concentrate in a poor learning environment. In addition, the lack of special rooms for science, computer lessons, or libraries means that many learning opportunities remain untapped.
This is exactly where PROBONO comes in. In cooperation with local schools, we plan and build school buildings that facilitate learning and enable the sustainable development of schools. We construct classrooms to relieve overcrowded rooms, enable weather-protected teaching, and create a learning-friendly atmosphere. This also includes science laboratories so that physics, chemistry, and biology are not only taught theoretically but can also be experienced practically through experiments.
For students from remote regions, we build boarding school buildings that make it possible for them to attend school in the first place. Accommodation at the school also promotes girls' education. This is because girls are traditionally heavily involved in housework and looking after younger siblings and often drop out of school early if they do not live in boarding school. Accommodation at school also reduces the risk of teenage pregnancies and early marriages. PROBONO also promotes computer rooms. They provide access to modern learning materials and digital skills, which are becoming increasingly important in the East African labor market.
