Volunteering in East Africa

Commitment and adventure: The PROBONO volunteer program

The PROBONO Volunteer Program offers young people aged 18 and over, students, and professionals from Germany the opportunity to volunteer at one of our partner schools in Tanzania or Uganda for a limited period of time. In addition to providing support in the classroom, depending on qualifications and needs, volunteers can also get involved in craft, art, or sports projects, or even work in school administration.

A stay as an educational volunteer is ideal for teacher training students, trainee teachers, and teachers on sabbatical, among others. Volunteers support the teaching staff or teach independently, depending on their qualifications and the needs of the school.

An important part of the volunteer work usually involves supporting dialogue between the German and African partner schools. For example, volunteers may coordinate, support, or accompany a dialogue project in close cooperation with both schools. A visit to the German partner school after returning from Africa is also part of the program.

The prerequisites for a successful stay at a PROBONO school in East Africa are:

  • Very good English skills
  • Good preparation
  • Intercultural sensitivity
  • Curiosity about a foreign culture and way of life
  • Initiative on the part of the volunteer
  • Flexibility
  • Sociability

Many PROBONO volunteers tell us after their return how their stay at a school in Tanzania or Uganda broadened their horizons and gave their thinking a new direction. They also learned a lot about themselves and their own country. “I notice that my view of many things has changed,” reports a high school graduate after her assignment at a secondary school in southern Uganda, for example: “I now see many things more critically, but at the same time more optimistically.”

Spending time as an educational volunteer in a country in the Global South can be a very formative experience. Volunteering promotes social skills and social learning. It encourages volunteers to re-examine their own actions in light of existing injustices and promotes social responsibility. Experiencing other value systems helps to break down prejudices.

If you are interested in volunteering at a PROBONO partner school in Tanzania or Uganda, we look forward to receiving your application in the form of a detailed resume and a letter of motivation explaining why you are interested in this volunteer work and what you expect to gain from it. Thank you very much!
