Water & Sanitation

Improvement of Water Supply

Water shortages are an issue at many schools in East Africa. The effects of climate change are clearly noticeable: shorter rainy seasons, more drought and aridity in many regions. Although most schools in Tanzania are connected to the public water supply, there is not enough water coming out of the taps, especially during the dry seasons. Many schools only receive water one or two days a week, and then only for a few hours. This leads to critical situations with serious health risks, especially at boarding schools. Access to clean water is particularly important for girls so that they can maintain adequate hygiene during their menstruation.

Girls carry buckets filled with water on their heads.

Improvement of Sanitation Facilities

The lack of toilets and washing facilities prevents many female students from attending school during their periods. This has an impact on their learning outcomes and thus on their chances of achieving a higher level of education. Statistics show that girls who attend school for longer periods of time earn higher incomes later in life, marry later, and live healthier lives.

Most schools in Tanzania are inadequately equipped with sanitary facilities. Compared to neighboring countries Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda, sanitation in Tanzania is even worse, especially in rural areas.

According to UNICEF, less than one in ten households in rural areas have their own sanitary facilities. Most schools also do not have enough toilets, and the few that do often do not even meet minimum requirements: more than half of schools do not have doors on the girls' toilets. Eighty-four percent of Tanzanian schools do not have functioning handwashing facilities. In addition, there is often a lack of knowledge about the importance of basic hygiene rules and their impact on health. As a result, far too many children still die from preventable infectious diseases. According to UNICEF, improving sanitation and applying simple hygiene rules could prevent almost half of all cases of diarrhea!

There is a great need for improved sanitation in many schools. Better hygiene conditions promote children's health. Healthy development is a prerequisite for regular and successful school attendance and increases the chance of escaping poverty through education. Please help with your donation!
